Old School Bus

Lucky Number Nine here brings back some good memories. As I was cruising home the other day I saw this bus patiently waiting its next assignment at a church parking lot. It just looked like it had a story to tell as a piece of many people’s lives.

Reflections of my childhood, this bus looked just like the one that transported me to and from school years ago. I learned some good lessons on the bus. Whether it was early business ventures selling chocolate bars for a fund raiser or trading some memorable sports cards up to learning the importance of being on time and minding my neighbors (especially the crazy driver Wild Bill!), it was a piece of the school of life.

Yeh, sometimes I would miss it and my parents would step up to the plate, taking time out of their busy lives to drive me to school. But the majority of the time, and throughout the seasons, I learned to be on point enjoying the journey to and from the bus stop. Whether making friends, looking out for my younger brother, or just staring out the window thinking about our world, the school bus provided a daily adventure, for me as big as life.

  1. Reminds me of a song, the wheels on the bus go…I didn’t take the bus to school from my house because I was close enough to walk, but when I would go to my best friends house I would have to take the bus. We would cram in the back to talk to the boys. I kind of wished I had to take the bus to get home because it seemed like the majority of my friends did and I felt like I was missing out on the social scene! Thanks for the fun picture Sean!

  2. Not everyone rides a big yellow school bus while growing up; nevertheless, it is a transportation icon. In its prime it carries youth–from kindergartners to teenagers impatiently awaiting the freedom of a driver’s license–to and from school and school-sponsored activities. Later, re-purposed like old #9, it may serve groups or organizations needing to transport groups of people.

A school bus is a society on wheels, with a dynamic flow of individuals coming and going, “doing their own thing” or interacting with others. Chatting, flirting, teasing, daydreaming, reading, watching the world go by-on a school bus one can do it all, and in just one trip!

With so much going on being his or her back, how does the driver manage? Being responsible for a load of active riders while keeping an eye on the road in all kinds of weather and at all rates of speed takes a special combination of patience and concentration–hats off to them.

As a keen and thoughtful observer of the world around him, Sean noticed what not everybody notices and took the time to create this image In our hectic lives, it makes us pause and remember. As Heather and Sean say, the wheels on the bus go round and round…making the stories of today and the memories of tomorrow.
