Water

Oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, aquifers etc…life, as we know, wouldn’t exist without it.

In this image the Yakima River forges its way through the land bringing life to the valley’s agriculture and population of livestock, wildlife and humans alike.

The State of Washington’s nickname is the Evergreen State, but interestingly nearly half of the State is a desert. Shaped throughout history this is caused by the Cascade Mountains and the Rain-shadow effect they produce leaving the majority of the precipitation on its western slopes in the Seattle/Puget Sound area. In truth this area of the World, Central Washington, sometimes receives less annual rainfall than the deserts surrounding Phoenix.

With its life sustaining power it only makes sense that in certain light water is impressionistic, shining as one of The Earth’s most valuable commodities.

What are your thoughts on this natural resource, and where are some of your favorite places to view water?

Like blood flowing through arteries in the body, natural and man made channels carry the treasure of water through the land. The contrast between the sage-covered hills and the lush irrigated landscape is a reminder that civilizations began with human management of the path of water.

My most vivid recollections of the miracle of water are associated with still early mornings and evenings in a boat on Blue Lake in north central Washington. Floating on a surface of liquid silver, I would wonder if there are other bodies in the universe that are blessed with that unique combination of hydrogen and oxygen.

Sean’s photographic painting of a tree silhouetted against the backdrop of the shimmering silver river recalls my imaginings and captures for me the truth that there is is no metal or mineral on earth more precious than water.

You may recall my reaction to the print of this photo when I was thumbing through your stack.
I think perhaps it’s my Piscean soul that is spoken to and nourished by this photo.

Reminds me of the infinitely chaotic nature of the universe, and how perfect it is in its intricacies.
A Dichotomy of movement and stillness. Of surface and space. Of life touching and reaching out into the void.
